Brief Description About the Trek

Spanning over 28 km, the Brahmatal trek offered by Travel with Himalaya commences from the picturesque base village of Lohajung, nestled in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas. The 6 km initial leg of the trek, leading from Lohajung to the enchanting Gujreni campsite, takes you through lush forests boasting an array of Conifer, Cedar, Oak, and Fir trees. The Gujreni campsite serves as the heart of a serene clearing, enveloped by majestic Oak and Rhododendron trees, offering panoramic vistas of the snow-capped mountain ranges.

The views along the trek route are nothing short of captivating, providing a visual treat of the High Himalayan ranges from east to west. Toward the east, you’ll feast your eyes on the mesmerizing Mrigthuni, Devtoli, and Maikoti peaks of Kumaon. To the north, the towering Trisul massif and the imposing Nanda Ghunti are awe-inspiring. Gazing westward, you’ll be treated to the sight of the colossal Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Kamet, Hathi, and Ghoda peaks. This ridge is situated opposite the famed Roopkund trek and offers a bird’s-eye view of the entire route, including Ali Bugyal, Bedni Bugyal, Roopkund, and Junargali, as well as the distant and renowned Ronty saddle.

The Brahmatal trek is most enjoyable during the winter and spring seasons. In the winter, the weather is typically clear, and the beauty of the surroundings is unparalleled, with a generous blanket of snow adding to the charm. In spring, the trail comes alive with the vibrant blossoms of Rhododendrons, and the last remnants of snow begin to melt away. For those who seek an extended camping trek, the combination of the Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal treks can form a complete circuit around Lohajung.

Lastly, it would be remiss not to mention our trek’s base, the quaint town of Lohajung, situated at an altitude of approximately 2320 meters (7600 feet). It consists of a single bustling strip market, a few modest eateries, and a handful of lodges. Nevertheless, the views of Nanda Ghunti mountain and the mesmerizing sunset over the southern valley are sufficient to set the tone for your journey.

During the winter months, from December to March, the Brahmatal trek allows you to not only trek to an alpine lake but also camp near the lake. The lake’s crystal-clear waters mirror a solitary tree standing on its far bank, and in the peak of winter, the lake becomes an enchanting ice wonderland. The sunsets from the Brahmatal campsite are nothing short of breathtaking and magical. Each day unveils a different palette of colors in the sky and meadows, making the trek an enduring and cherished memory.

As you descend to your first campsite, you’ll encounter Bekaltal Lake, which is nestled within a dense forest of oak and rhododendron. Bekaltal Lake, larger than Brahmatal Lake, has its own alluring folklore that has spanned many centuries.
